North Vancouver Public School Advocate Cyndi Gerlach to Seek Vacant District School Trustee Seat
North Vancouver — Long-time public education advocate Cyndi Gerlach officially announced her intention to run as a candidate for School Trustee in the September 19 by-election.
Gerlach has years of experience working with key members of the education community, and understands the importance for School Trustees to work effectively with the school district administration, teachers, parents, and community partners.
Recently, Gerlach championed the creation of the District’s new Learning Centre for Children with Autism and Related Disorders. Gerlach is proud that the program was created at no extra cost to the District. The centre was unanimously voted for by the Board of Education trustees, and is fully supported by the North Vancouver Teachers Association and the School District.
“What I saw in our traditional classrooms wasn’t working: teachers stretched beyond their capacity, and many students failing to flourish,” says Gerlach.
“We want so much from teachers. We expect them to support children with many needs — gifted, learning disabilities , ESL, autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities — and still meet the learning requirements of all their students. How can one teacher possibly meet such a wide range of responsibilities?
The Learning Centre is scheduled to open in September 2009.
Gerlach ran in the November 2008 municipal election and came within two per cent of achieving a seat on the board. She graduated from Handsworth Secondary School, and has three children enrolled in North Vancouver public schools. An active volunteer, Gerlach sits on a number of school board and provincial advisory committees, assists primary students with math, and is the registrar & secretary of a community soccer board.
